IFTA Explained

The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) is an agreement between 48 states and ten Canadian provinces (excluding Alaska, Hawaii and the Canadian territories). IFTA licensees report and pay fuel taxes quarterly in their license jurisdiction. Those taxes are then distributed to the appropriate IFTA members.

So, if your drivers are based in Missouri and also drive and purchase fuel in Iowa and Kansas, they’ll submit IFTA reports in Missouri. The Missouri Department of Transportation then distributes fuel taxes to Iowa and Kansas as needed.

Who needs to submit IFTA reports?

Qualified motor vehicles that travel in two or more IFTA jurisdictions and have:

How to Comply with IFTA

IFTA compliance doesn’t have to be a hassle. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Get an IFTA license in your jurisdiction, usually through the DMV or DOT. In Missouri, apply for this license through MoDOT. Licenses are valid from January 1 to December 31 each year.

  2. Submit quarterly reports generated by ES Track by their due dates.

  3. Display two current IFTA decals on qualifying vehicles. When you order decals, make sure you don’t order any more than you need. If you add more qualifying vehicles to your fleet, you can request more.

  4. If you don’t have any fuel taxes to report for the quarter, file a No Operation return.

  5. Maintain records for four years from their due date or from the date submitted, whichever is later.
